Grant Activity:
Gene Expression to Predict Long-Term Outcome in Infants After Heart Surgery
Purpose:
The grantee will identify gene expression patterns predicting patient-centred short and long-term outcomes in infants undergoing heart surgery. The study is an expansion of the grantee's existing large trial of infants under 2 years of age undergoing open heart surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass across all paediatric heart surgery centres in Australia and New Zealand. Using cutting-edge gene expression studies, the grantee will investigate the individual response to cardiopulmonary bypass. A state-of-the-art neuropsychological assessment is performed in all children until school entry age. The aim is to understand and predict the adverse impact of heart surgery on infants with heart disease to improve long term outcomes for children with childhood heart disease.
