PBS Program Name:
DISR 18/19 Supporting Science and Commercialisation
Grant Program:
Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope Project
Grant Activity:
SKA Radio TelecsopesPre–construction activities
Purpose:

The purpose of this Grant aims to assist with the design and development work for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) during the preconstruction stage. Sub-project 1: SKA Science Data Handling and Processing In early 2019 the Science Data Processor (SDP) Critical Design Review (CDR) will take place and the pre-construction phase will be closed-out. Thereafter, a SOW of work defines SKA Bridging tasks will be negotiated with SKAO. The project aims to advance the JACAL software toolkit, based on Australian precursors and the SDP design, to make it ready for SKA early commissioning. A joint Solution Train will be established for system integration of the Bridging deliverables. Thesis activities including support for System-CDR will be planned together with SKAO, partner institutions and industrial co-design partners on an ongoing basis. Sub-project 2: SKA Synchronisation and Timing The aim of this sub-project is to conduct the SKA Bridging Phase tasks identified by the SKAO, the Signal and Data Transport (SADT) consortium, and other stakeholders. These tasks related to the SKA Phase Synchronisation System developed by researchers at ICRAR UWA for the SADT consortium. The outlined work is essential to establish a production-ready end-to-end synchronisation demonstration system and thereby ensure a successful SKA system-level critical design review.
