Purpose:
The research proposed here is to apply the latest development of continuous ion exchange technology (CIX) to the separation of rare earths. In particular, we propose that the focus be on heavy rare earth separation for two main reasons:
i) Heavy rare earth are present at lower concentrations than the light rare earth's which favour the application of IX
ii) Conventional solvent extraction is more expensive for HRE than LRE due to the high acidity required for effective stripping from the solvent so the application of IX may offer some opportunity for reducing reagent costs
