Grant Activity:
Immunoglobulin A degradation by the gut microbiome
Purpose:
The antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA) plays an important role in the immune response to microbial species at mucosal surfaces. Pathogenic bacterial species are known to degrade IgA in the gut to aid their virulence; however, little is known about this activity in commensal bacteria. Here, we aim to study a novel protein identified in a gut commensal bacterium that can potentially degrade IgA, and determine if this protein activity has downstream consequences to disease susceptibility.
