Eliminating the major Helminth Neglected Tropical Diseases from the Lower Mekong Basin
Purpose:
Helminths are parasitic worms which infect humans, with health impacts ranging from nutrient absorption from food and resulting anaemia and malnutrition, to long term effects on chronic disease risk, particularly for some cancers. This research will establish comprehensive control measures for these helminths in the Lower Mekong Basin areas of Thailand, Lao PDR and Cambodia, a high burden region. Treatment, public education and environmental control will be used to reduce the burden.
