Peers not Partners: Towards a Deeper Korea-Australia Partnership
Australia and South Korea have strong bilateral relations but do not yet view each other as strategic partners. They have not articulated a strategic agenda that surpasses tensions on the Korean Peninsula nor have they had a dialogue that reconciles Australia's adoption of the Indo-Pacific as a policy-making instrument with South Korea's New Southern Policy. This project proposes to convene a working group of 14 experts to develop options and solutions for pursuing deeper Australia-South Korea economic, security, and diplomatic relations in an Indo-Pacific context. It will examine, for example, how bilateral cooperation can shape the economic architecture of the region and support the rules-based international order. The project will consist of two, four-hour workshops with the group meeting virtually. Centre staff will facilitate discussions so that they produce concrete proposals for deepening bilateral cooperation. The Centre will produce and publish an outcomes report to support and inform policy development.
