Grant Activity:
The contribution of the gut to bipolar disorder
Purpose:
Bipolar disorder is a severe mental illness affecting many Australians. We provide evidence that specific gut cells may trigger the mood fluctuations that are central in bipolar disorders. Activation of these cells can alter brain activity via a pathway called the gut brain axis. This project will focus on understanding how serotonin release from these cells affects brain function in bipolar disorder and how we can target these cells to create new treatments for this disease.
