Purpose:
The building and construction sector in Australia consumes around 700,000 tonnes of plastics each year (20% of Australia's plastic consumption); less than 12% is recycled and more than 40% is disposed of in landfill. Although plastic is a reliable material for the construction industry, the fluctuating price of raw materials and quality issues with recycled materials may hamper market growth in the future. This urgent problem can be addressed by developing new advanced recycling and automated manufacturing processes to utilise a high tonnage of recycled plastic waste in lightweight prefabricated building products (LPBP). This will expedite the recycling of plastic waste to reduce the costs of LPBPs whilst controlling their quality.
