Building Korean-Australian connections through experimental street dance...
This project brings together 4 Australian and 3 Korean street dancers from Palette Session to establish the first experimental jam in Gadigal / Sydney and strengthen cross-cultural linkages between Korean and Australian street dance communities.
Palette Session is a South Korean experimental dance collective creating safe spaces for dancers to reflect on their approach to movement through the eyes of others. They run guided jams which allow dancers to pinpoint, analyse and share elements of their movement with each other. They have a membership of 517 dancers, performers and choreographers who are active within Korea’s flourishing street dance industry.
A jam is a gathering of dancers improvising to music. Jams inspire creativity and build tight-knit communities as diverse participants dance and share their craft with each other. Palette Session jams are open to dancers of all genres and levels of experience.
Across 3 months, the Australian and Korean dancers will work together (online and in-person) to design and facilitate a localised model of Palette Session’s experimental jam for Gadigal’s street dance scene. As the first international chapter within Palette Session’s network, this project will increase the Australians' capacity to effectively engage with experimental and street dance communities in Korea.
