Grant Activity:
New treatments to prevent acute kidney injury in high risk patients.
Purpose:
Patients with diabetes or chronic kidney disease are at high risk of severe kidney injury following cardiopulmonary bypass surgery in which the kidney suffers a loss of blood supply (ischaemia). We have identified two independent pathways by which ischaemia induces kidney failure. Inhibitors of these pathways will be tested in models of kidney ischaemia in animals with diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Positive findings can be rapidly translated into clinical trials in this common procedure.
