NHMRC 17/18 1.1 Health and Medical Research
Grant Program:
Project
Grant Activity:
Small molecule inhibitors of the pro-apoptotic proteins BAX and BAK
Purpose:
The potential to control proteins whose activities dictate whether a cell will live or die offers significant opportunities to develop new medicines for diseases ranging from cancer to strokes. In this research program, we aim to develop new drug-like molecules that can inhibit BAX and BAK, the proteins that induce cell death. BAX/BAK-inhibitory molecules might help to prevent normal cells from dying in the context of diseases such as ocular retinopathies or stroke.
