Grant Activity:
Defining key determinants of HLA mediated T cell tolerance and autoimmunity
Purpose:
When the immune system malfunctions it can cause the body to lose tolerance one or more of its own proteins, leading to autoimmune diseases that affect more than 5 percent of the population. This project uses autoimmune kidney disease to study why we lose tolerance to ourselves. Understanding this process is not only fundamental to defining the basis of autoimmune diseases but also a key step in the development of more effective, more targeted and less toxic therapies in the future.
