TRIP Fellowships
Grant Activity:
Reducing low-value knee arthroscopy in Australia
Purpose:
This fellowship project addresses the important problem of overuse of arthroscopic surgery for knee osteoarthritis. High quality evidence shows arthroscopy is ineffective and potentially harmful. Despite this, over 30,000 Australians undergo this surgery annually at a cost of greater than$32 million to Medicare. I propose to evaluate whether a patient decision aid is effective in improving patients’ knowledge and risk perceptions about knee arthroscopy and reduces referrals for knee arthroscopy.
