Pathway to a Novel Treatment for Pancreatic cancer – Targeting the Microenvironment
Purpose:
Pancreatic cancer is highly resistant to standard forms of treatment. Our group has recently discovered that the fibrous tissue surrounding the cancer cells is formed by star-shaped (stellate) cells and these cells are now believed to greatly increase the spread of the cancer. In an attempt to improve patient outcomes, this study will investigate a combination of a standard anti-cancer agent with one that interferes with the recently reported action of the stellate cells on cancer growth.
