Grant Activity:
Solar Panels and LED lights at Townsville Brass Band Hall
Purpose:
Project Scope: Install a solar system at the Townsville Brass Band Hall in South Townsville. Convert 22 double batten fluorescent lights, three metal halogen floodlights to LED equivalent, and replace three emergency lights to LED equivalent. Key Activities: Following an excessive power bill in the summer of 2021, the committee wanted to investigate what was happening. Firstly, we completed an in-house energy audit to identify the most energy hungry appliances based on the Bands use. We found that the main consumers of energy were air conditioners at 50% of our total electricity bill for the year, the fridge was around 20%, and the lights were around 15%. There were definite seasonal differences in consumption with January, February and March increasing three-fold compared to the other months. With this information, we approached several solar installation companies to investigate our options. The Committee has decided that installing a solar system compatible with our three-phase power unit would have a dramatic impact on our energy consumption. By using our own solar power during the day (10am-4pm), and with the assistance of an automatic timer, especially in summer, we would be able to cool the Band Hall in the early afternoon. When rehearsals were on between 4-8pm (NB: the 2hr rehearsals differ in time each day), we would then only need one air conditioner on, to maintain the optimum room temperature. This will significantly reduce the need to turn on all air conditioners during the daily peak demand period of 4-8pm to an already hot hall. We have calculated that by installing a solar system we can reduce our power consumption on air conditioners from 50% down to 35% of the total electricity bill. Since having the Band Hall roof inspected, we have also realised that the iron roofing on the Club Room would be a more viable option for installing solar panels, as appose to the aging concrete tile roof on the main building.
