Grant Activity:
Bioengineered tissue models to identify new antiarrhythmics for atrial fibrillation
Purpose:
We will use sophisticated engineered tissue models of atrial fibrillation (AF) as the basis of a new high throughput screen for better and safer drugs for AF. Our models incorporate genetic and environmental modifiers by combining heart muscle cells with fibroblasts (involved in scarring of the heart) and signalling from adiposes (fat cells), allowing detailed examination of the pathology of AF, and development of pharmacological treatments for this potentially fatal disorder.
