Grant Activity:
Protecting the blood supply against infectious disease by strengthening the evidence base that guides donor selection and screening policy
Purpose:
Donor deferral and screening strategies have been highly effective in reducing the risk of acquiring infections from blood/blood products in Australia. Yet every decision about deferral/screening has a range of costs, so must be weighed carefully using the best available evidence on risk and benefit. We propose to work with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service to strengthen its processes for risk/benefit evaluation to support the overall framework for decision making on donor screening/eligibility
