Powering Communities
Grant Activity:
Green and clean at WLT
Purpose:
Williamstown Little Theatre has been engaged in a refurbishment of our premises since theatres were closed in March 2020. This project has suffered significant delays due to a number of factors including the complete shut down of the construction industry, delays with permits from the local council, delays in supply of materials and ongoing lockdowns in Victoria. This has left us with no income for over 18 months and has caused us significant angst. An opportunity for WLT to obtain funding for part of this project is something we are keen to ensure. We have always intended our new theatre to be as energy efficient as possible and have already incurred significant costs in upgrading our heating and cooling facilities which had been antiquated and expensive to run and maintain. Our building is not purpose built and was originally an old bakery. This layout means we are constantly trying to work around areas with asbestos and other structural issues which adds further expenses to any work undertaken. The building also has a heritage overlay and maintaining the original fa?ade has added unexpected expense. Despite this, we continue to progress with the works and are now nearing completion. We had originally intended to look at installation of solar energy in phase 2 of our project which we had hoped would commence shortly after the current phase. Our current financial status however means this will need to be delayed. Were we to succeed in this application, it would mean that we could at least have the solar system installed and functioning. This would reduce our energy costs and, as importantly, align with our philosophy to be a greener organisation. By enabling us to take this step in conjunction with our current refurbishment, we believe we would be in a much better position to both begin to work towards the next stage of our refurbishment and allow our normal activities to commence. Whilst our productions tend to be held in the evening there are numerous activities.
