Grant Activity:
Harnessing the gut microbiome to improve stem cell transplant outcome.
Purpose:
A major barrier of stem cell transplantation, the curative therapy for patients with high-risk blood cancer, is graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Overall survival for patients with gut GVHD is 25% at 2 years. Treatment regimens damage the gut leading to bacterial exposure which impacts transplant outcome. This project focuses on advancing our understanding of immunomodulatory bacteria, generating new knowledge to inform the development of new treatments and predictive biomarkers for GVHD.
