Program Name:
Indigenous Mental Health First Aid Training (IMHFAT)
Description:

The Indigenous Mental Health First Aid Training program aims to deliver culturally safe and appropriate mental health first aid courses teaching participants to assist others in the community that are experiencing mental health issues, until professional help is received. The program also provides training to frontline staff in NIAA funded services to support members of the community by being able to recognise the signs of mental health issues. Training provided through the program also improves the capacity and resilience in Indigenous communities affected by suicide and/or related high trauma incidents.

The program also contributes to Target 14 of the new National Agreement on Closing the Gap, aiming to achieve a ‘significant and sustained reduction in suicide of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples towards zero’.

The intended outcome of this grant opportunity is increased awareness and capacity of Indigenous families and communities to recognise the signs of mental health issues and be able to find appropriate pathways for assistance if needed.
