The NHMRC-NIHR Collaborative Research Grants scheme (NHMRC-NIHR scheme) supports Australian participation and collaboration in leading international collaborative research through the United Kingdom’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme. The HTA Programme funds independent research about the effectiveness, costs and broader impact of healthcare treatments and tests.
Projects involving Australian researchers based in Australia that are chosen by the NIHR for funding, may be eligible for NHMRC support.
Eligible Topics
NHMRC is supporting Australian researchers for the following NIHR HTA research topics:
- 18/34 Routinely used interventions for improving attachment in infants and young children
- 18/35 Behavioural intervention to treat anxiety in adults with autism and moderate to severe learning disabilities
- 18/38 Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor for the treatment of anxiety in adults with autism
- 18/36 Anticonvulsant augmentation of antipsychotic medication in the management of psychosis
- 18/29 Preventing job loss in people with long term physical health conditions
Applications are only required to be submitted to NHMRC if you have been invited to submit a full application to NIHR.
Applications must satisfy all the requirements set out in the NHMRC-NIHR scheme specific Funding Rules 2018.
Applications will only be accepted from NHMRC approved Administering Institutions. A list of NHMRC approved Administering Institutions is available at:

The Australian applicants must be successful through the NIHR HTA process to be eligible to receive funding from NHMRC.

$3,000,000.00
Applications must be made to, and approved through the NIHR HTA Programme review process to be eligible for funding from NHMRC.
Applications are only required to be submitted to NHMRC if a Stage 1 submission has progressed to the Stage 2 application. The Australian Chief Investigator A (CIA) must forward evidence of invitation to submit a Stage 2 application, with their NHMRC application, to the NHMRC by the advertised closing date and time.
Applications must be submitted electronically using NHMRC’s online Research Grants Management System (RGMS) unless otherwise advised by NHMRC.
A complete NHMRC – NIHR Scheme Application must consist of the following:
- Completion of Parts A and B of the application form;
- The relevant information in the applicants RGMS Profile;
- The uploaded PDF document containing your Research Proposal; and
- A copy of the Proposal submitted to the NIHR and evidence of invitation to submit a Stage 2 application.
Value of individual grants will be pro rata based on the number of successful applications.
