Grant Activity:
The emerging public health threat of community-acquired Clostridium difficile infection in Australia
Purpose:
Clostridium difficile, an antibiotic-resistant organism, causes chronic, debilitating, life-threatening diarrhoea. It is a major threat to vulnerable hospital patients, and to any individual who has recently been treated with antibiotics. I will investigate the emerging issue of C. difficile contamination in our communities, due to use of contaminated manure from farm animals as a soil fertiliser, thus identifying ways to protect the Australian public from this dangerous pathogen.
