Science for Australia's Future – Inspiring Australia
Grant Activity:
Hunt for the plastic eaters, Australia to find solution to plastic waste dilemma
Purpose:
The lid has been lifted on human wastefulness, but what next? Science Gallery Melbourne (SGM) delves into our ever–growing mountain of garbage to find innovative opportunities and solutions. In 2018 a research group in Japan found bacteria that love to feast on plastic. This National Science Week, SGM is teaming up with Bioquisitive to throw down the gauntlet, and challenge Australia to find the next plastic–eating bacteria! This project takes Science Gallery Australia–wide, asking citizen scientists to culture bacteria in the search for a new species that could solve our plastic waste dilemma. SGM is part of an international network, engaging 15–25 year olds with STEM through the collision of art and science. Join the team trying to find Australia's Next Top Plastic Eating Bacteria.
