Grant Activity:
Advanced Integrated Photonics Circuits for Future Navigation Systems
Purpose:
Autonomous vehicles rely inherently on knowing where they are and where they are going at any point in time. Usually, location information is obtained via GPS and trajectory is inferred from speed and the direction that the car is travelling. This is not really fast or accurate enough in order to avoid collisions and hence the autonomous system must rely on sensing road markings and other cues, but then becomes dependent on well maintained markings, for example becoming confused by road works. This project will explore the use of high precision optical gyroscopes of the sort used to create maps of our roads and integrate these onto photonic micro chips so that they can be small enough and cheap enough to be deployed in every self driving car. This will make sure these vehicles know where they are and where they are going regardless of the condition of their environment.
