Purpose:
90% of the world's vanadium production is produced from Vanadium titaniferous magnetite (VTM). However, the current VTM production route is not suitable for the production of high purity vanadium for battery applications, is relatively costly, and does not extract value from the other critical mineral by-products and iron in the deposit. This CRC-P will focus on recovering vanadium (as V2O5) to 99.95% purity for vanadium redox battery applications, as well as developing economical processes to enable the recovery of additional by-products from VTM ore, from what would in standard VTM processes be rejected as waste. These by-products will include the critical minerals titanium and chromium, as well as iron, sulphate salts and ammonium.
