Quantifying myocardial inflammation in acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease
Purpose:
This research will use cardiac MRI to identify and measure inflammation of the heart in patients with acute rheumatic fever (RF). A score of extent of cardiac inflammation will be developed to aid in the diagnosis of RF, which at present, is based on clinical signs alone and can be difficult to accurately determine. Accurate diagnosis is important to guide secondary antibiotic prophylaxis which has been shown to prevent further episodes of RF and progression to rheumatic heart disease.
