PBS Program Name:
ARC 18/19 Discovery
Grant Program:
Discovery Projects
Grant Activity:
Learning to stop: linking intra-cortical inhibition to response control
Purpose:
This project aims to test the link between behavioural inhibition, an essential psychological ability, and neural inhibition, by using a combination of new neurophysiological techniques and innovative experimental design. The project intends to generate insight into the neural and psychological mechanisms involved in deliberately inhibiting planned responses and learned inhibitory reflexes. Expected outcomes include a strong understanding of how inhibition in the brain contributes to control of behaviour and why some individuals are more efficient than others at inhibiting undesirable actions. The project carries health and societal benefits by identifying how individuals with poor inhibitory control can benefit from interventions.
