Grant Activity:
Does WithHolding Enteral feeds Around blood Transfusion reduce the incidence of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) in very preterm infants? The international WHEAT Study
Purpose:

Necrotising enterocolitis is a rare gut disease that occurs in 1-5/10,000 newborns. A third of infants will die and many survivors will suffer long-term health and neurodevelopmental impairment. A link between blood transfusions for anaemia and the incidence of NEC has been reported. This world-first neonatal point-of-care trial, innovatively embedded in a national clinical quality registry, will test if withholding feeds for 12 hours around transfusion time will prevent this serious disease.
