Grant Activity:
Wireless optogenetic induction of gastrointestinal transit in conscious mice
Purpose:
One of the most common health care concerns in the community is chronic constipation. Drugs have limited benefit, because they act on many other organs causing a number of side effects. We present a new technology, called wireless optogenetics, whereby light, instead of drugs is used to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract without affecting any other organs. We present the first evidence that wireless optogenetics can stimulate the gut leading to increased transit of content in live mammals.
