Grant Activity:
Presynaptic control of general anaesthesia
Purpose:
We have recently discovered a new mechanism for general anaesthesia. Sedatives such as propofol first put you to sleep, but then do something completely different: they impair communication between neurons across the brain. We need to better understand exactly how this happens, for the different drugs used during surgery. This understanding will allow us to design more targeted approaches for general anaesthesia, with better temporal control during surgery as well as minimal side effects.
