Purpose:
Traditionally, general surgical doctors attended to and operated on unwell patients inbetween outpatient clinics and elective operating lists. A new Acute Surgical Unit (ASU) model was pioneered in Australia in 2005. This system offers an on-site registrar, on-call consultant, and dedicated emergency theatre, available 24 hours a day and dedicated solely to patients with emergency general surgical conditions like appendicitis. Results are very promising. More research is needed to promote uptake.
